In the latest article here at the Collegiate student advice centre, we take a bit of a closer look at Aravaca, and why the area could be simply perfect for your time studying in the Spanish capital.
A Bit of Background
Although Aravaca is a barrio that is separated from the rest of Madrid by the vast Casa de Campo Park, it is still an ideal location for students looking for the perfect student digs. Having been all but devastated by the Siege of Madrid between 1936 and 1939, Aravaca was tastefully restored and rebuilt in the forties, all in the typical old Castilian style; making the area extremely desirable and quintessentially Spanish.
Since the nineties, the area has more than doubled in population as it became more desirable to the middle-class society, this has resulted in a rather bohemian atmosphere and one that is pretty much perfect for the student community.
What To Do In Aravaca
You may have the bright lights of Spain’s capital less than half an hour away when living in Aravaca, but there is plenty to keep you occupied when living in this up and coming district of the city.
Experimenta Madrid
A truly Spanish experience and one that we thoroughly recommend you try at least once during your time at Collegiate Aravaca are the Experimenta Madrid. This is a free tour that starts at Palacio de Linares and takes you on a journey through all of the city’s most famous areas, perfect for anyone looking to really embrace the city. This could also be the perfect test for your developing Spanish skills as the tours are usually just in the local tongue.
Madrid Zoo Aquarium
If you’re on the hunt for the very best fun things to do in the Aravaca region of Madrid, then you may want to check out the Madrid Zoo Aquarium. This is towards the south of the aforementioned Casa de Campo Park and little more than twenty minutes from Collegiate Aravaca.
A 20-hectare zoo which specialises in all manner of marine wildlife, this local attraction could well be the perfect day out for you and your university friends, and you get a further opportunity to check out Madrid’s biggest and best national park. Opened all the way back in 1770, Madrid Zoo Aquarium is one of the city’s oldest zoos and if you’re lucky you may even get to see the Giant Panda!
Night Running in Casa de Campo
You may well have noticed a trend emerging here, but Casa de Campo really is the gift that keeps giving when it comes to great things to do in the Aravaca region. One that may appeal to the fitness fanatics out there, is night running in the park.
The pine-filled paths of this park are somewhat of a haven for runners and their night sessions allow you to enjoy the national park without the heat of the Madrid summer to contend with. A spectacle that is growing in popularity, this is probably the freshest and most wholesome of local activities but one that students in the city are welcomed to enjoy.
